This is one of the 3 Theban plays that survived. It was the 2nd to be written. Though, due to the arrangement of the events that the trilogy describes, Oedipus Rex comes first. The other two plays are Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone. The plot describes the story of the king Oedipus, who acts completely in ignorance.

Several parts of the tale occur before the beginning scene of the play. Oedipus turns into the new king of Thebes. However, he unknowingly accomplishes a prediction that he would murder his father and wed his mom.

The act of the play deals with his quest for the previous king’s killer in order to end a torment desolating Thebes. While he absolutely doesn’t aware that he himself is the murderer, whom he is searching for.

Ultimately, when the reality reveals, his mom hangs herself. While he himself remains astonished at his incest and patricide. As a result, in lose heart he continues to gouge out his own eyes.
